MOD (Ministry of Defence)

The UK's Ministry of Defence (MOD) protects the security, independence and interests of the United Kingdom at home and abroad. The government department works with UK allies and partners whenever possible. Its aim is to ensure that the armed forces have the training, equipment and support necessary for their work, and that it keeps within budget.

Responsibilities

The Ministry of Defence has 7 military tasks:

  • defending the UK and its overseas territories
  • providing strategic intelligence
  • providing nuclear deterrence
  • supporting civil emergency organisations in times of crisis
  • defending our interests by projecting power strategically and through expeditionary interventions
  • providing a defence contribution to UK influence
  • providing security for stabilisation

One of the MOD's key priorities is to continue the transformation of defence through the restructuring of the armed forces to create a simpler and more effective organisation at a lower cost to the taxpayer. This means sharp management of defence procurement.
